International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology (icreate) aspires to play a key role in shaping an eco-system that nurtures talent to build entrepreneurial capital that leverages emerging technologies by focusing on addressing pain-points that impact a vast majority of society.

whatnext is the flagship annual event organized by icreate. The purpose of this event is to provide a platform for participants to holistically explore trends in emerging technologies, engage with successful entrepreneurs and experts, interact with investors, and network.

The inaugural whatnext 2013, highlighted 12 globally emerging areas in technology as compiled by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) and presented by one of its author’s Dr. Jacques Bughin.

whatnext 2015 will bring together a variety of opinion leaders, policy designers, successful entrepreneurs, academicians and leading investors to share their experience and vision of the future.

The theme of this event is “The Journey – Converting Ideas into Wealth” for opportunities in the realm of 12 empowering technologies relevant to India as identified by MGI.

This edition of whatnext has a special feature for start-ups to pitch to investors in an Entrepreneur-VC Speed Dating format.

An academic and practitioner at once, Dr. Yuklea has been directly involved for the last 35 years in the remarkable build-up process of the Israeli high-tech sector, his career ranging from technology development and engineering to marketing, management, consulting and investment. Dr. Yuklea is an advisor to the Israeli National Economic Council, the Israeli Chief Scientist Office, the UNECE and to EUREKA -the EU Industrial R&D Network. Harry holds a MSEE from TUI, a MSM from Boston University and a PhD from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Yuklea is also the member of icreate Advisory Board.

Mr. Sunil Parekh is the Founding Curator – Global Shapers Initiatives at World Economic Forum, Geneva. He is also an Advisor to Zydus (Pharma) and Jubilant Group (Energy). He is the Founder & Chairman of PanIIT Alumni-Gujarat. Mr. Parekh is a member of several advisory boards like the Vibrant Gujarat Advisory Board 2011, 2013, 2015; CIIE@IIMA, NDBI @ NID and several university and MBA programs. He is also a board member of GCCI, FICCI, GESIA and AMA. He is the Founder of Gujarat Angels. Mr. Sunil Parekh is an engineer from IIT Delhi and has over 30 years of professional experience including 15 years of international exposure in Africa, Europe, and the U.S.

03-Prof.-Oded-Shoseyov

Dr. Oded Shoseyov is a faculty member of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prof. Shoseyov’s research is in plant molecular biology and nano-biotechnology. His group focus on Bio-Inspired Nanocomposite materials. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific publications and is the inventor/co-inventor of 45 patents. Prof. Shoseyov received the Outstanding Scientist Polak Award for 2002, the 1999 and 2010 Kay Award for Innovative and Applied Research and The 2012 Israel Prime Minister Citation for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He is the scientific founder of 9 companies.

Angela Homsi

Ms. Angela Homsi is an international impact investor, seasoned sustainability expert, and highly regarded practitioner and lecturer on conflict resolution, development finance, and community-bridging. Her experience spans across multidisciplinary domains of impact finance. She has made investments across all impact sectors with a sustainability overlay, from climate change to base of the pyramid solutions like water, waste, resource scarcity, healthcare, and nutrition. She also specializes on cross-border sustainable investments in developing and developed markets with a particular focus on Africa and Asia.

It sells solar-as-a-service to energy-poor households and SMEs in rural India.

Dr. Ranka established Zydex Industries in 1999 at Vadodara. The company over the years has made its presence in about 40 countries all over the world. Dr Ranka is the co-inventor of the Company’s nano technology organosilicon based waterproofing product for buildings & roads. He has developed new Agro Soil Conditioners to improve bio-activity of soils for 30-40% improved growth & yield. Dr Ranka has many US, European & Indian Patents to his credit.

Karl Mehta is a Silicon Valley based serial entrepreneur, author, engineer, investor and civil servant with over 20 years of experience in founding, building, and funding technology companies. He is currently Founder & CEO of EdCast Inc., a next-generation knowledge platform company and investor in various venture capital funds and tech startups in the US. He is a former White House presidential Innovation Fellow and currently serves a board-member of California Governor Brown’s Workforce Investment Board. Mr. Mehta is also a member of icreate Advisory Board.

08-Mr.-Narayana-Murthy

Mr. Narayana Murthy founded Infosys, a global software consulting company headquartered in Bangalore in 1981. He served as the CEO of Infosys during 1981-2002, as the Chairman and Chief Mentor during 1981-2011, and as the Chairman Emeritus during August 2011-May 2013. Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999. Mr. Murthy articulated, designed, and implemented the Global Delivery Model, which has become the foundation for the huge success in IT services outsourcing from India. He has led key corporate governance initiatives in India. He is also an IT advisor to several Asian countries.

Mr. K. Venkataramanan has been associated with L&T for over four decades in various positions of responsibility. A graduate in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Delhi, he joined L&T in 1969. After a series of successful assignments, he was elevated to the Board of Directors of the Company in May, 1999, and appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director on April 1, 2012. Mr. Venkataramanan is also member of icreate Advisory Board.

Prof. Jajoo joined IIM- Ahmedabad in 1980. Previously, he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Delaware, USA from 1987 to 1989. He has participated in more than thirty consulting projects for national and international, private and public sector organizations. He has been invited several times to design and conduct workshop and seminars at several reputed institutions, corporate houses, and professional bodies like CSI and IEEE. Currently, he serves as a Member of Board of Directors of many technology companies.

12-Dr.-Madhukumar-Mehta

Dr. Madhukumar Mehta is a technocrat who turned to being a coach for pursuit of next gen entrepreneurship. In the past he has founded three companies. First was a consulting firm to design digital electronics based products (notably calculators). This was followed by Digital Innovations, which designed and marketed computers for diverse applications. The third venture – Anjaleem, created attended PCO and shaped the birth of STD PCO markets in India. Dr. Mehta has mentored many startups and is also involved with many industry, non-profits, university bodies to promote technology and entrepreneurship.

Speed Dating

One of the special features of this edition of whatnext 2015 is the chance for Finance Ready Startups to pitch to investors in an Entrepreneur – VC Speed Dating Format. You get a chance to showcase your enterprise in a 10 minute one to one pitch to a VC/Angel. This includes Q & A time.

Please note the application information will be used for the limited purpose of shortlisting internally by icreate. The VCs/Angels participating in Speed Dating will be asked to sign a Non-Disclosure Undertaking.

 

Event Format

  • Each VC/Angel sits at a table
  • Entrepreneurs get dedicated time with the VC/Angel to share their idea for advice / brainstorming / funding
  • Each “date” is strictly for 10 minutes
  • Entrepreneurs move to the next table when the bell rings
  • Each entrepreneur gets to talk to all participating VCs
  • Only founding team ( no more than 2 persons representing the team) allowed to present
  • Entrepreneur is allowed to bring his/her laptop/poster/ etc to present. Please note – projectors will not be provided.
  • This is a closed room event

 

Qualification

Who qualifies as Finance Ready Start-up?

  • Should have a registered company
  • The product/service should be in market
  • Should have customers and visible revenue stream of 2-3 years
  • Should be able to demonstrate enough scope for scaling up
  • Actively looking for seed or round A investments

This process gives you the opportunity to present your startup to icreate for shortlisting. You are required to submit a write up taking note the following details:

  • All write ups must be typed and submitted in font size 12, Times New Roman single-spaced not exceeding 2500 words or 3 pages in a doc/docx format ONLY.

You get the chance to showcase your enterprise, project or idea in a 10 minute pitch to a panel of VCs/Angels. This includes Q & A time.

This edition of whatnext 2015 features a Demo Day. Each startup/idea/project has five minutes to pitch to an open forum comprising of students, entrepreneurs, CXO’s, policy makers, academicians, investors etc.

Demo Day opens doors for the entrepreneurs, helps them connect with a network of people who are interested in what they’re doing and give them insights into possible ways of improving their business or product. The purpose is to demonstrate the products/services/idea (rather than attract investors).
